THE BOAT PEOPLE

Over the years that the canal has been in existence, its use has developed from the carriage of materials, the transportation of people on the 'packet boats' and, at the turn of the millennium, recreation and permanent residence.

In the year 2000, the number of boat dwellers based at Avoncliff varied but approximately 10 boats, ranging from the large double narrowboat 'EMILY BRONTE' to the tiny fifteen foot 'URCHIN' have become a regular feature of the hamlet.

The 'boat people' are part of Avoncliff's rich and varied culture and contribute a great deal to the community with some of the children attending the local school in Westwood.
